Fastems won a major industry award with the help of Idean design work
Tuesday, October 25, 2011
Our client Fastems Ltd is a World leading provider of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) and robot cells for automating metal cutting CNC machine tools, and provides services related to automation. Idean helped Fastems to study gesture interaction in industrial settings.
The outcome of the project participated in a major industry award in Finland and won the first price in the FIMECC Prize competition. FIMEC news (in Finnish).
Idean helped in:
1) designing the gestures,
2) validate gestures,
3) summarize findings (e.g. video) and
4) draw conclusions
Gestures have been a phenomenal success in video games. Microsoft Kinect sold a total of 8 million units in its first 60 days after its release in November 2010 and holds the Guinness World Record of being the “fastest selling consumer electronics device”. Now the gestures are about to revolutionize many of the industry processes and will give competitive edge to pioneering companies. “This project was a extremely interesting and provided us a view to the future industry trends” says Mika Käki, Lead Designer with Idean.
