Get Ready for Micro Payments

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

Micro payments are coming. Some portion of the web content currently available for free will be chargeable in the future. Majority of the premium content has to remain very cheap, however, in order to find paying customers from the people who have become familiar with the conception of the “free web”.

As far as Idean’s business is concerned, usability of the online micro payment systems should be considered. If some content costs, say, one cent, it is more likely that a negative purchase decision is due to poorly functioning payment applications which annoy the user, rather than the actual cost.

If the payments are dealt with in the background, without the need of explicit interaction from the user, the browsing experience is not broken. At least up til some weekly or monthly limit, preset by the user.

More of this in the following blog entry by Santtu Toivonen: Tietoviikko (in Finnish).

How do you think the prohibitive cost of processing micro payments will be overcome to enable the benefits of this size of payment to get off the ground let alone to flourish
