Case: Desktop applications - redesign through structured testing

Designing PC and Mac applications is highly inspiring. As web applications become more and more closer to desktop user experience, understanding practical design challenges from the both areas is highly important. When we add mobile dimension to this play we’re talking seriously about convergence.
We have designed desktop application concepts and user interfaces in many different projects.
Client:
A major enterprise software vendor and their key customer
Need:
The end-customer required some major interface and functional changes before they would be willing to commit to purchasing the application. The requested redesign would have jeopardized delivery schedules and created major budget issues.

Idean Solution:
Idean conducted an extensive multi-country usability research study to assess the suitability of the solution to the end-customer’s processes. The need for changes was verified, but a considerably simpler fix to the issues was identified and proposed to the end-customer. As the suggested new solution was backed up by considerable amounts of rigorous and well-documented research data, the end-customer accepted the solution and the project could move on in the intended schedule and budget.

Results:
- A new, considerably simpler and more effective solution was identified
- Idean’s client won the contract and was able to deliver the modified application on time and budget
- The end-customer got the solution it required at a lower cost and faster than using the solution it originally insisted on.
- Rigorous research provided answers that informal analysis was not able to unearth.
